What Makes Yorkville One of the Best Neighborhoods in NYC

Old-school German roots with new-school NYC energy

Yorkville is the Upper East Side's realest neighborhood — less polish, more personality. Its German and Hungarian roots show up in the beer halls and the old bakeries, but the new wave of restaurants on 2nd Avenue has turned it into a legitimate food destination. It's the UES for people who actually live here, not people who want to say they live on the Upper East Side.

Yorkville, stretching from roughly 79th to 96th Street east of Lexington, was once Manhattan's Germantown—and traces of that heritage linger in a few remaining beer halls and bakeries. Today it's a residential neighborhood that's more relaxed and affordable than the UES blocks south of it. Carl Schurz Park along the East River is a gem, with views of the Queensboro Bridge and Gracie Mansion (the mayor's official residence). Second Avenue has a solid stretch of restaurants and bars. The vibe is neighborhood-first: regulars at the bar, familiar faces at the coffee shop, dog owners who all know each other. It's the Upper East Side for people who don't want to perform being Upper East Side.

Best For

A beer hall evening that starts with a liter of German lager, moves to schnitzel, and ends at a neighborhood bar on 2nd Ave where everybody knows each other

Insider Tip

The German beer halls are iconic but the newer restaurants on 2nd Ave are the sleeper hits.

Did You Know?

Yorkville was once called 'Germantown' and 'Little Germany' — the neighborhood had its own German-language newspapers, theaters, and beer gardens. The community was one of the largest German enclaves outside of Europe until the anti-German sentiment of WWI scattered it.
