What Makes Sugar Hill One of the Best Neighborhoods in NYC

Where Harlem's sweetest history lives on in every block

Sugar Hill is the crown jewel of upper Harlem — the neighborhood where Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, Thurgood Marshall, and W.E.B. Du Bois all lived because it was the sweetest place for Black excellence in America. The brownstones on Edgecombe Avenue are some of the most beautiful in the city, and the mix of soul food institutions and Dominican newcomers creates a food scene with serious depth and history.

Sugar Hill earned its name in the 1920s when upwardly mobile Black families moved to this elevated section of Harlem—living the "sweet life" above the rest of the neighborhood. The area, roughly 145th to 155th Street between Edgecombe and Amsterdam Avenues, was home to Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Thurgood Marshall, and W.E.B. Du Bois. The brownstones and limestone rowhouses here are among the most beautiful in Manhattan. The Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art & Storytelling opened in 2015 in a striking new building. Dining options are growing but still neighborhood-scale—Dominican, Southern, and new American spots. The views from Edgecombe Avenue over the Polo Grounds and across the Harlem River are stunning.
