What Makes Little Italy One of the Best Neighborhoods in NYC

Two blocks of red sauce and a whole lot of character

Little Italy is the most honest tourist trap in New York. It's shrunk from a full neighborhood to basically two blocks of Mulberry Street, the red-and-white checkered tablecloths are cliche, and yes, Chinatown has absorbed most of it. But. The cannoli is still perfect, the outdoor seating in summer is still magical, and during San Gennaro in September, this tiny stretch becomes the most joyful block party in the city.

Little Italy is technically just Mulberry Street between Canal and Broome at this point—Chinatown has absorbed most of what was once a thriving Italian immigrant neighborhood. But what remains still has charm, especially during the Feast of San Gennaro every September when the street erupts with sausage stands, zeppole carts, and crowds. The restaurants are tourist-heavy and overpriced compared to real Italian food elsewhere in the city, but locals will admit that sitting outside on Mulberry Street on a warm night with a glass of Chianti still feels like something. Lombardi's claims to be America's first pizzeria. The history is real, even if the neighborhood is mostly a memory.

Insider Tip

Mulberry Street during San Gennaro is chaos. Beautiful, delicious, mozzarella-fueled chaos.
