Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Moodap™ — 100 questions answered

About Moodap

Moodap™ is NYC's mood-based venue discovery platform. No more doom-scrolling Yelp reviews from 2019. You answer 7 quick questions about your mood, vibe, and budget — and we match you to the perfect spot from 25,000+ Manhattan venues. Think of it as a GPS for your gut feeling.

Moodap™ was built by New Yorkers who were tired of the same recommendation cycle — open Yelp, scroll forever, pick something mid. We wanted a faster, vibe-first way to find the right spot for the right moment. So we built one.

Yes. 100% free for users. No login, no paywall, no "upgrade to see your results" nonsense. We make money from businesses and advertisers, not from you. That's the deal. Always.

Over 25,000 across 43 Manhattan neighborhoods — bars, restaurants, cafes, entertainment venues, and activities. We add more every week. If it exists in Manhattan and has a vibe, we probably have it.

Bars, restaurants, cafes, entertainment venues, and activities. Everything from speakeasies and rooftop lounges to comedy clubs, bowling alleys, jazz bars, and late-night diners. If it has a vibe, it's on here.

For now, yes — 43 neighborhoods from Washington Heights to Battery Park City. Brooklyn, Queens, and the other boroughs are coming soon. After that, we're expanding to 150+ cities nationwide. Manhattan was just the start.

Brooklyn is next on the roadmap, followed by Queens and the rest of NYC. We don't have exact dates yet, but the infrastructure is built to scale. Follow us for updates.

Absolutely. After full NYC coverage, we're expanding to 150+ cities nationwide — starting with LA, Miami, Chicago, and other major nightlife destinations. The mood-matching algorithm works anywhere there are venues.

Yelp and Google Maps show you everything and let you sort. Moodap™ asks what you're feeling right now and shows you only what fits. No infinite scroll, no sponsored results buried in organic. Seven questions, under 25 seconds, done.

We offer premium advertising placements for businesses — one corporate ad spot and one local ad per category per neighborhood. That's it. Zero clutter. We also plan to offer premium analytics for business owners. Users never pay.

How Mood Match Works

Seven taps. Under 25 seconds. You pick your neighborhood, indoor/outdoor, timing, who you're with, the crowd energy you want, what kind of spot, and your budget. Our algorithm scores every matching venue on a 100-point scale — factoring in vibe match, insider tags, reviews, and a dash of discovery randomness so you're not seeing the same places every time. The top matches land in your results.

Under 25 seconds for most people. It's 7 quick taps — no typing, no scrolling through options. Each question is a simple choice. By the time you've finished, your results are already loading.

Seven questions: (1) What neighborhood are you in or heading to? (2) Indoor or outdoor? (3) What time — now, tonight, or later this week? (4) Who are you with? (5) What energy level do you want? (6) What kind of spot? (7) What's your budget? That's it.

Nope. Even with identical answers, results vary. Our scoring includes a "Discovery Factor" — a controlled randomness that surfaces different gems each session. The best-matched venues still rise to the top, but there's always room for a surprise. That's the point.

Every venue gets scored 0-100 based on how well it matches your quiz answers. The score weighs neighborhood match, vibe alignment, insider tag relevance, review quality, and a discovery randomness factor. Higher scores mean a better fit for your current mood.

The Discovery Factor is a controlled randomness in our scoring algorithm. It ensures you don't see the exact same results every time you take the quiz with similar answers. The top matches still float up, but there's always a chance to discover somewhere new. It keeps things fresh.

As many times as you want. There's no limit. Changed your mind about the neighborhood? Different vibe tonight? Just retake it. Each session generates fresh results thanks to the Discovery Factor.

Insider tags are the secret sauce. Things like "hidden entrance," "sit at the bar," "rooftop," "late-night kitchen," or "password entry." When a business fills out their profile with these tags, they match better against your specific mood. A date-night search surfaces spots tagged with "scenic views" and "private dining." A solo search finds "free wifi" and "power outlets." More tags = better matching.

Absolutely. Browse by neighborhood at /nyc or by category at /nyc/categories. Every single venue has its own profile page with vibe tags, insider tips, hours, photos, and reviews. The Mood Match is the fastest way, but we're not gatekeeping anything.

Four things: (1) How well it matches your quiz answers — neighborhood, vibe, timing, budget. (2) Insider tag relevance — venues with tags that match your specific mood score higher. (3) Review quality — rating, review count, and video reviews all factor in. (4) Discovery factor — a small random boost so every session feels fresh. Businesses that fill out their profile fully have a real advantage.

It works for both. One of the seven questions asks who you're with — solo, date, friends, family, or coworkers. The algorithm adjusts venue recommendations based on group size and dynamic. A rowdy friends night out gets different results than a quiet couple's dinner.

Your results come pre-filtered by the quiz — that's the whole point. But you can also browse venues directly by neighborhood or category if you want more control. We keep the quiz results focused so you're not back to infinite-scroll mode.

Venues & Neighborhoods

All 43 Manhattan neighborhoods — from Inwood and Washington Heights in the north to the Financial District and Battery Park City in the south. Every major area is covered: Midtown, SoHo, Greenwich Village, East Village, Lower East Side, Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Harlem, and more.

We combine public data sources, Google Places data, and AI-powered analysis of venue websites and social media. Business owners can also claim their venue to add first-party details — insider tips, signature items, real hours, and those all-important insider tags. Claimed venues always have the freshest, most accurate info.

Our automated systems refresh data continuously. Google Places data syncs regularly, and our AI scans venue websites and social for changes. Business owners who claim their profile can update info instantly. If something's outdated, hit the feedback button and we'll fix it fast.

Yes — and that's one of the best parts. Speakeasies and hidden bars are tagged with insider tags like "hidden entrance," "password entry," and "secret menu." Take the quiz with a date-night or adventure vibe and they'll surface in your results.

Absolutely. The quiz asks whether you want indoor or outdoor — pick outdoor and you'll see rooftop bars, patios, sidewalk cafes, beer gardens, and open-air venues. Many are tagged with "rooftop," "garden," "scenic views," or "waterfront."

Yes. The timing question in the quiz lets you specify late-night, and venues tagged with "late-night kitchen," "24 hours," and "after midnight" will surface. Manhattan's late-night food scene is well represented.

Venues with happy hour specials are tagged accordingly. When you set your timing to afternoon or early evening and choose a budget-friendly option, happy hour spots score higher in your results.

Yes — live music venues, jazz clubs, comedy clubs, and performance spaces are all categorized under entertainment. Insider tags like "live music," "jazz," "comedy shows," and "open mic" help the algorithm match you when you're in that mood.

Take the Mood Match quiz and select "date" for who you're with. The algorithm will prioritize venues tagged with "romantic," "intimate," "scenic views," "private dining," and "candlelit." You'll get a curated list of date-worthy spots that match your neighborhood and budget.

Yes. Select "family" in the quiz and the algorithm surfaces venues tagged as family-friendly, kid-appropriate, with high chairs, and with early dining options. It's not just bars and nightlife — we have cafes, restaurants, and activities that work for all ages.

Choose "outdoor" in the indoor/outdoor question and you'll get venues with patios, rooftops, gardens, sidewalk seating, and open-air spaces. These are specifically tagged so the algorithm knows the difference between a windowless basement bar and a sun-drenched terrace.

That's what the Discovery Factor is for. Even if you take the quiz with the same answers, the controlled randomness ensures you see different venues each time. You can also browse neighborhoods you don't usually visit at /nyc to explore outside your comfort zone.

For Business Owners

You're probably already on here. Head to /for-businesses and search for your venue. From there you can claim it with a quick email verification, update your profile with insider tags and signature items, and access analytics showing exactly how users discover your business through Moodap™. Claimed venues with filled-out profiles rank higher in Mood Match results. It's free to claim.

Go to /for-businesses, search for your venue, and click "Claim." We'll send a verification code to an email address on your business domain (e.g., you@yourbusiness.com). Enter the code, and your claim is verified. The whole process takes under 2 minutes.

Yes. Claiming your business on Moodap™ is completely free. You get to update your profile, add insider tags and signature items, and see how users find you — all at no cost. We never charge for basic business features.

To verify you actually own or manage the business, we require an email on the business's domain. If your venue is "Joe's Bar" at joesbar.com, you'd verify with an email like manager@joesbar.com. This prevents unauthorized claims and keeps business profiles trustworthy.

You get access to your business dashboard where you can update your venue profile — add insider tags, signature items, photos, hours, and a description. You also get analytics showing how often your venue appears in Mood Match results, how users find you, and what moods trigger your venue. Filling out your profile fully helps you rank higher.

Insider tags are how the algorithm matches your venue to specific user moods. Tags like "live DJ," "craft cocktails," "private dining," "pet-friendly," or "late-night kitchen" tell the algorithm exactly what vibe you offer. The more relevant tags you add, the more specific mood queries you'll match — and the higher you'll rank for those queries.

Signature items are your standout offerings — your famous burger, specialty cocktail, must-try dessert, or signature experience. After claiming your venue, you can add these in your business dashboard. They appear on your venue profile page and help users understand what makes your spot special.

Yes. Your business dashboard includes analytics showing how many times your venue appeared in Mood Match results, what mood combinations triggered your venue, which neighborhoods users were searching, and more. This data helps you understand how customers discover you through Moodap™.

Claimed venues with complete profiles have a significant advantage. They have more insider tags for the algorithm to match against, verified business information, and richer content for users. All else being equal, a fully filled-out claimed profile will outrank an unclaimed venue with minimal data.

Yes. Once claimed, you can update your hours, photos, description, insider tags, and signature items anytime from your business dashboard. Changes go live immediately — no approval process, no waiting. You control your own profile.

If your Manhattan venue isn't in our database, contact us through the /contact page and we'll add it. Most venues are already listed from our data sources, but if you're new or we missed you, we'll get you set up quickly.

Each venue claim is independent and tied to that venue's domain email. If you own multiple venues with different domains, you'll verify each separately. We're working on multi-venue management features for restaurant groups and hospitality companies.

Advertising on Moodap

Yes — and it's not like other platforms. We run ONE corporate ad spot (not ten, not fifty — one) and ONE local ad per category per neighborhood. That means zero clutter, zero competition within your slot. Your brand gets undivided attention. Head to /advertise to learn more.

Most platforms stack ads until users ignore them all. We do the opposite — strict ad limits. One corporate sponsor and one local business ad per category per neighborhood. Your ad isn't competing with 15 others for attention. Users actually see it.

We offer corporate sponsorship (one exclusive brand sponsor across the platform) and local neighborhood ads (one ad per category per neighborhood). Local ads let you target the exact neighborhood and venue type where your customers are searching.

Pricing depends on the ad type and targeting. Local neighborhood ads are priced per category per neighborhood, so you only pay for the areas that matter to your business. Corporate sponsorship is priced separately. Contact us at /advertise for current rates.

Yes — that's the core of our local ad product. You pick the neighborhood and category (e.g., "bars in Lower East Side" or "restaurants in SoHo"), and your ad appears exclusively in that slot. One ad per slot means maximum visibility with zero competition.

No. Ads are clearly labeled and separated from organic Mood Match results. We never insert paid results into the organic algorithm. Your Mood Match results are always based on genuine vibe matching, not who paid the most.

Visit /advertise to see current ad options and pricing. You can also reach out directly through /contact. We'll help you choose the right placement based on your business type, target neighborhood, and goals.

Our corporate sponsorship option works for any brand — local or national. The local neighborhood ad product is currently Manhattan-only, but as we expand to new boroughs and cities, local ad inventory will grow with it.

Reviews & Trust

We aggregate review data from trusted public sources and display it on venue profiles. Our review integration considers overall rating, review count, and recency. We're also building native Moodap™ reviews focused on vibe and mood — not just food quality or service speed.

Since we aggregate from established review platforms with their own fraud detection, fake reviews are already filtered at the source. As we build native reviews, we'll implement verification measures to ensure authenticity — including visitor verification and AI-powered fraud detection.

Native Moodap™ reviews are coming soon. They'll be different from traditional reviews — focused on vibe, mood match accuracy, and insider tips rather than just star ratings. We want reviews that actually help the algorithm get smarter about matching.

Review quality is one of four factors in the Mood Match scoring algorithm. Venues with higher ratings, more reviews, and more recent reviews get a scoring boost. But reviews are just one factor — vibe match, insider tags, and the discovery factor all play roles too.

Not yet — but it's on the roadmap. When native Moodap™ reviews launch, claimed business owners will be able to respond to reviews directly from their dashboard. For now, reviews displayed are aggregated from external sources.

We aggregate and display review data including ratings and review counts from public sources. Individual review text isn't copied — we show summary data to help you gauge a venue's reputation alongside our vibe-based matching.

Video reviews are a planned feature that will let users share short video clips of their venue experience. Video captures vibe in a way that text can't — the lighting, the crowd, the energy. Venues with video reviews will get a scoring boost in the algorithm.

We combine multiple data sources — Google Places, venue websites, social media, and claimed business owner data — to cross-reference information. Claimed venues are the most accurate because owners verify their own details. If something's wrong, the feedback button lets users flag it for quick correction.

VIP & Influencer Program

We're building a VIP program for frequent users and power contributors. VIP members will get early access to new features, exclusive venue partnerships, priority support, and special badges on their profiles. Details are coming soon.

The VIP program is currently in development. When it launches, VIP status will be earned through consistent platform usage, quality reviews, and community contributions — not just paid access. Follow us for launch announcements.

Yes. We're building an influencer partnership program for NYC nightlife and food creators. Influencers get access to exclusive features, venue partnerships, and content collaboration opportunities. If you're an influencer interested in partnering, reach out through /contact.

Planned VIP benefits include early access to new features and neighborhoods, exclusive venue deals and partnerships, priority customer support, VIP profile badges, and invitations to Moodap™ events. The program is designed to reward genuine platform engagement.

The core Moodap™ experience will always be free. If we introduce a paid VIP tier, it will be for premium extras — never for basic functionality. We'll never paywall Mood Match results or venue browsing.

Verified influencer badges are planned for the influencer program. Verification will require demonstrated reach and engagement in the NYC nightlife and food space. Verified influencers will have their reviews and recommendations weighted differently in the algorithm.

Influencer partnerships create authentic content around venues, driving real foot traffic. Unlike paid sponsorships on other platforms, our influencer program connects creators with venues based on genuine vibe alignment — not just who pays the most.

When the VIP program launches, there will be a nomination and application process. Power users who contribute quality reviews, share the platform, and engage consistently will be prioritized. Stay tuned for official launch details.

Tourism & Visitor Passes

Incredibly useful. Tourists often don't know which neighborhood to explore or where to eat without falling into tourist traps. Moodap™ surfaces the same spots locals love — based on your mood, not on which restaurant paid for a TripAdvisor placement. No local knowledge required.

A visitor pass feature is on the roadmap. It would bundle curated venue recommendations across multiple neighborhoods into themed itineraries — "First Timer's NYC Night Out," "Foodie Weekend," "Jazz & Cocktails Trail." Each pass would leverage Mood Match to personalize the experience.

Yes. You can take the Mood Match quiz and browse venues from anywhere. Many visitors use Moodap™ to scout neighborhoods and save spots before their trip. The quiz works the same whether you're on your couch in London or in a cab from JFK.

That's one of the biggest benefits. Our algorithm doesn't factor in how much a venue pays — it scores based on vibe match, insider tags, and review quality. Tourist-trap spots with inflated prices and mediocre reviews naturally score lower than authentic local gems.

Yes. Visit /nyc to browse all 43 Manhattan neighborhoods. Each neighborhood page shows its venues by category, giving you a feel for the area's personality. It's like having a local friend walk you through every block.

Not yet, but it's on the roadmap. Multi-day itinerary planning would let you map out an entire trip — different moods for different nights, different neighborhoods to explore. For now, you can take the quiz multiple times for each evening to build your own itinerary.

Currently Moodap™ is English-only. Multi-language support is planned for future releases, especially as we expand internationally. The quiz format is visual and simple enough that non-native English speakers generally have no trouble using it.

Every venue has its own shareable profile page URL. You can copy and send any venue link to friends. We're also working on shared lists and group planning features so you can collaborate on where to go with your crew.

Privacy, Security & Legal

We collect minimal data. No account required, no login, no email. We use anonymous analytics to understand how people use the quiz and browse venues. We don't sell personal data. Period. Check our privacy policy at /privacy for full details.

No account is needed to use Mood Match or browse venues. You can optionally create a free account to save favorites and get personalized recommendations.

We use optional browser geolocation to suggest nearby neighborhoods in the Mood Match quiz. This data is not stored or tracked — it's used only in the moment to find spots near you. You can always skip this and choose a neighborhood manually.

Quiz responses are processed in real-time to generate your results and aren't stored tied to any personal identity. We use anonymous, aggregated quiz data to improve the algorithm. Your individual quiz answers are not shared with venues, advertisers, or any third party.

We use essential cookies for site functionality and analytics cookies to improve your experience. See our Cookie Policy at /cookie-policy for full details.

Our full privacy policy is available at /privacy. The short version: we collect minimal data, don't require accounts, don't track location, don't sell data, and use anonymous analytics to improve the platform. We respect your privacy like we respect your vibe.

Yes. We follow GDPR principles even for US-based users — data minimization, purpose limitation, and transparency. We collect only what's necessary to provide the service and give you clear information about how data is used.

Since we don't require accounts and collect minimal data, there's very little to delete. If you've submitted feedback with an email address and want it removed, contact us through /contact and we'll handle it promptly.

Business claims are verified through domain-based email verification — only someone with access to your business email domain can claim your venue. All communications are encrypted, and we follow security best practices for data storage and access control.

Our terms of service are available at /terms. They cover standard usage terms, intellectual property, user conduct, and liability limitations. We keep them readable and fair — no 47-page legal documents designed to confuse you.

Account, App & Support

No download needed. Moodap™ works as a PWA — a Progressive Web App. That means you can add it to your home screen from any mobile browser and it works just like a native app. No App Store download required. Tap "Add to Home Screen" in your results and you're set.

Native iOS and Android apps are on the roadmap. For now, the PWA experience is designed to feel native — it works offline-capable, sends notifications (when enabled), and launches from your home screen like any other app.

On iPhone Safari: tap the share button (square with arrow), then "Add to Home Screen." On Android Chrome: tap the three-dot menu, then "Add to Home Screen" or "Install App." Moodap™ will appear as an app icon and launch in full-screen mode.

Yes. Moodap™ works on Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and all modern browsers — desktop and mobile. We recommend keeping your browser updated for the best experience, but even older browsers handle the core quiz and browsing functionality.

Saved favorites are coming with optional user accounts. For now, you can bookmark any venue profile page in your browser. Every venue has a unique URL that's easy to save and share.

Hit the Feedback button — it's available on every page. You can also use the feedback form accessible throughout the site. We review every submission and update venue data regularly. If something's wrong, we want to know.

Visit /contact to reach our team. Whether you have a question, found a bug, want to partner, or just want to say hi — we read everything and respond promptly. Business owners can also reach out through the /for-businesses page.

As a PWA, Moodap™ has basic offline capability — previously loaded pages and venue profiles can be accessed without an internet connection. The Mood Match quiz requires a connection to generate fresh results, but cached content is available offline.

We're committed to web accessibility. The site follows WCAG guidelines with proper heading structure, alt text, keyboard navigation, and screen reader support. If you encounter any accessibility issues, please let us know through /contact so we can fix them.

Use the Feedback button available throughout the site, or visit /contact. We actively read all feedback and use it to prioritize features. Many of our best improvements have come directly from user suggestions. Your feedback matters.

We're building an optional newsletter for neighborhood guides, new feature announcements, and curated venue spotlights. It'll be opt-in only — we'll never spam you or share your email. Watch for the signup option on the site.

Try refreshing the page or clearing your browser cache. Make sure you have a stable internet connection. If it's still not working, try a different browser. If the issue persists, let us know through /contact with your browser and device info so we can investigate.
