What Makes Midtown East One of the Best Neighborhoods in NYC

Power lunches, Grand Central, and surprisingly good happy hours

Midtown East is the neighborhood that runs on expense accounts and surprisingly good taste. The skyscrapers house every major corporation in the world, Grand Central Terminal is the most beautiful building most people just walk through, and the steakhouses and sushi bars between Lex and 3rd are quietly some of the best in the city. It's not sexy, but the martinis are perfect and the oysters are fresh.

Midtown East is corporate Manhattan's living room. Grand Central Terminal is the anchor—both a transit hub and an architectural masterpiece (look up at that ceiling). The surrounding blocks are packed with office towers, which means the restaurant scene is built for business: legendary steakhouses (Smith & Wollensky, Sparks), Japanese omakase spots, and power-lunch Italian. The Chrysler Building's Art Deco crown towers over everything. After 7 PM on weekdays the streets empty out fast, but the bars and restaurants that stay open are quieter and surprisingly pleasant. Weekends are dead, which can be a feature if you want a table at a normally impossible spot.

Insider Tip

The Oyster Bar in Grand Central is the most underrated meal in Midtown. Been there since 1913.
