Governors Island is a short ferry from the Battery and feels a long way from the city. It is car-free, largely open lawn and historic brick, and it runs on a season—generally spring through autumn—so check before you plan around it. The Hills give you the Statue of Liberty and the harbour from a slide at the top; Fort Jay and Castle Williams cover the military history; and the rest is art installations, hammock groves, food vendors and bicycles. Food and drink are seasonal and concentrated near the ferry landing, so treat it as an afternoon out rather than a dinner plan.
