Why NYC First

We could have started anywhere. But Manhattan has the density, the culture, and the urgency that makes this work.

People keep asking: why New York? Why not launch everywhere at once?

Because everywhere at once is how you build something mediocre. And this idea — mood-based venue discovery — only works if the data is deep. Not wide. Deep.

Manhattan is 23 square miles. In that space, there are over 25,000 venues. Bars, restaurants, cafes, lounges, comedy clubs, music venues, rooftops, speakeasies, food halls, pop-ups. The density is unlike anywhere else on earth.

That density is exactly what makes the matching problem solvable. If someone tells us they’re in a chill mood, near the West Village, with one other person, and they want to keep it under $50 — we can give them a genuinely perfect answer. Because within a 10-minute walk, there are probably 40 spots that fit. Our job is finding the best one.

Try that in a suburb. Try that in a mid-size city. You get maybe three options, and two of them are chains. The math doesn’t work.

New York also has the culture.

New Yorkers go out. It’s not optional — it’s the entire point of living here. You’re paying $3,500/month for a studio apartment, so you’d better not be eating dinner at home every night. The social pressure to discover, to explore, to find the next spot is baked into the city’s DNA.

And yet the tools are broken. Even locals — people who’ve lived here for years — default to the same 5 places because searching for something new is exhausting. We know people in the East Village who’ve never been to a bar in Alphabet City three blocks away. The discovery is that broken.

There’s another reason NYC makes sense: 43 distinct neighborhoods.

Manhattan isn’t one city. It’s 43 micro-cities stacked on top of each other. Tribeca and the Lower East Side are a 15-minute walk apart and feel like different planets. Each neighborhood has its own energy, its own crowd, its own best-for scenarios. That’s not a bug — it’s the feature. It’s what makes mood-based matching so powerful here.

If we can crack Manhattan — the most dense, most demanding, most competitive market in the world — we can take this anywhere. Brooklyn. LA. London. Tokyo. But if it doesn’t work here, it won’t work anywhere.

So we’re going deep on one place. Every block. Every venue. Every vibe. Every hidden gem that some bartender told us about at 2am.

It’s New Year’s Eve as we write this. We’re sitting in our apartment, watching the ball drop on TV, thinking about the thousands of people who are out right now having the best night of their year — and the thousands more who couldn’t figure out where to go.

Next year, they’ll have Moodap.
