That’s how many venues are currently in the Moodap database. Restaurants, bars, cafes, entertainment venues, activities, wellness spots — every single one mapped, categorized, subcategorized, mood-tagged, and placed in one of 43 Manhattan neighborhoods.
When you zoom out on our internal map and see all 27,957 dots, Manhattan looks like it’s covered in confetti. Every color represents a different category — red for restaurants, green for bars, blue for cafes, purple for entertainment. You can see the density clusters. The Lower East Side is packed so tight the dots overlap. Midtown is a wall of color. Even the quieter neighborhoods — Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill — have hundreds of venues each.
We remember when the database had 500 venues and it felt like a lot. Then 5,000 felt massive. 10,000 felt impossible. Now we’re closing in on 28,000 and the work of maintaining data quality at this scale is a completely different challenge than building it was.
Here’s what 27,957 venues actually means:
It means when someone in East Village takes the quiz and says they want a chill cocktail bar for a date, we’re not picking from 5 options. We’re scoring hundreds of venues and surfacing the one that fits best. The depth of the database is what makes the matching work.
It means when someone browses restaurants by category, they’re seeing real coverage. Not a curated list of 50 trendy spots. The full landscape of what’s out there — from the $5 dumpling window to the $400 omakase counter.
It means the map actually looks like Manhattan. Not a sparse scattering of pins on a Google Map. A dense, living visualization of every place where New Yorkers eat, drink, and go out.
We’re not done. We add new venues every week as places open. We remove closures. We update the ones that change. The database is alive in the same way the city is alive — constantly evolving, never finished.
28,000 is not the goal. It’s a checkpoint. The goal is that if a venue exists in Manhattan and you can walk in the door, it’s in Moodap with accurate data.
