The Business Side

How Moodap makes money without selling out users. Claimed profiles, featured placements, and the future revenue model.

A friend asked us last week: "How does Moodap make money?"

Fair question. The platform is free. No signup. No subscription. No ads (yet). 25,000+ venues, free access, free matching. So where’s the business?

Here’s the thinking:

Right now, we’re in the "build something people actually use" phase. The worst thing a startup can do is optimize for revenue before it has users. You end up building a monetization engine for a product nobody wants.

But we’re not naive. We have a plan. And it starts with venue profiles.

Every business on Moodap has a profile. Right now, those profiles are populated with our data. But venue owners can claim their profile and take control. Add their own description. Update hours. Post insider tips. Upload photos. Make their page the best version of itself.

Claiming is free. It will always be free. A business should never have to pay to have accurate information online.

The premium layer is visibility.

When someone takes the quiz and gets matched to 5 venues, what determines the order? Right now, it’s purely algorithmic — best match first. In the future, claimed venues with rich profiles will naturally rank higher because they have better data. And for venues that want guaranteed visibility, we’ll offer featured placement.

Not fake results. Not "pay to be the top match." Featured placement in specific, clearly-labeled sections of the results page. You’ll always know what’s a mood match and what’s featured. Transparency is non-negotiable.

The bigger play is data.

Moodap will eventually have rich data about what New Yorkers are in the mood for. Which neighborhoods are trending on Thursday nights. What vibe is most popular among 25-34 year olds. Whether "chill" is more requested than "high energy" in the Lower East Side.

This aggregate, anonymized data is enormously valuable to venue owners. If you own a bar and you learn that 70% of mood-matched users in your area are looking for "intimate date night" vibes, you can adjust your lighting, your music, your marketing. You’re not guessing anymore.

We’re not there yet. We need users first. We need data first. But the model is clear:

Free for users. Always. Free to claim your profile. Always. Premium tools for businesses that want more — visibility, data, analytics. That’s the revenue.

The businesses that win on Moodap won’t be the ones that pay the most. They’ll be the ones that best match what people actually want. That’s the incentive we want to create.
